What the video converters do

MP4 to GIF turns a short clip into an animated GIF that loops forever. The GIF is made at 15 frames per second and 480 pixels wide, with the height scaled to keep the original proportions. MP4 to MP3 leaves the picture out and saves only the soundtrack as an MP3 file.

Both converters take MP4 clips of up to 30 seconds. A longer video isn't converted and only shows the general Conversion failed message, so cut out the part you need before you upload it.

To make a video smaller without changing the format, use Compress MP4. It encodes the picture again as H.264 at 1200, 800 or 500 kbps and the sound as AAC at 128, 96 or 64 kbps, depending on the quality you choose, and moves the index to the start of the file so playback can begin before the download is done. Compress MP3 does the same for audio at 160, 96 or 64 kbps.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my GIF bigger than the MP4?

A GIF stores each frame as a picture with at most 256 colors and has none of the compression of modern video, so even a few seconds can turn into a large file. Shorter clips help, and Compress GIF can lower the frame rate and the number of colors.

Can I convert a video longer than 30 seconds?

Not with these two converters. Trim the video to 30 seconds or less in any video editor first, then upload the MP4.

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No. GIF is an image format without an audio track. Run MP4 to MP3 on the same clip if you want the sound as well.

Why does MP4 to GIF change the size of my video?

Every GIF comes out 480 pixels wide, which keeps the file size manageable. The height follows the original aspect ratio, so a 16:9 clip becomes 480 by 270 pixels.
