Compress MP3 encodes the audio again with LAME at a constant bitrate: 160 kbps from 75 on the slider, 96 kbps from 45 and 64 kbps below that. Encoding an MP3 again always loses a little more detail, so start from the best copy you have.
Frequently asked questions
Will music sound bad?
At 160 kbps most music still sounds fine. At 96 and especially 64 kbps cymbals and other high sounds lose clarity, which matters less for speech such as podcasts.
What is the smallest setting?
64 kbps, which the tool uses for any quality below 45. That is fine for voice recordings and noticeably duller for music.
