About PNG to ICO
Convert a PNG into a Windows .ico file with four sizes inside: 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels. The PNG is first fitted into a 256 by 256 square, with transparent padding when it isn't square. A PNG smaller than that isn't enlarged, so it sits small in the middle of the icon.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need a .ico file?
Browsers still ask for /favicon.ico when a page doesn't declare an icon, so it is a safe fallback next to a PNG icon.
What size PNG should I upload?
A square PNG of 256 by 256 pixels or larger. A smaller PNG isn't scaled up, so a 64 pixel image fills only a quarter of the icon's width and is barely visible at 16 pixels.
