How the image converters work

A format change is made to lose as little as possible. PNG and WebP output is written lossless, and JPG output uses quality 100 with full color resolution, without the chroma subsampling that blurs color along sharp edges. Photos are turned upright from their EXIF orientation first, and animated files are converted from their first frame.

JPG has no transparency, so a transparent PNG loses its see-through areas when you convert it to JPG. PNG to ICO scales large images down to fit within 256 by 256 pixels and keeps the transparency. SVG to PNG takes an uploaded .svg file or SVG code pasted into the box.

Image Resize runs in your browser, so the picture isn't uploaded at all. Image Compress keeps the file type: JPG and WebP are saved at a lower quality, and PNG is reduced to fewer colors, with the top of the slider staying fully lossless. The converters read images of up to 144 megapixels, such as 12000 by 12000 pixels.

Frequently asked questions

Does PNG to WebP lose quality?

No. The WebP is written lossless, so every pixel matches the PNG. Lossless WebP is usually smaller than the same PNG, though not for every image.

Why did my file get bigger after JPG to PNG?

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, while JPG saves space by throwing detail away. The PNG holds everything the JPG still had but can't bring back what was lost, and the lossless file is usually larger.

Can a JPG have a transparent background?

No, the JPG format has no alpha channel. Convert to PNG or WebP instead when you need transparency.

Is my image uploaded when I resize it?

Not with Image Resize, which works on a canvas in your browser and hands you the file directly. The other image converters upload the file and process it on the server.
