About Compress PDF
Compress PDF runs the file through Ghostscript at most twice. It first tries the ebook setting, which brings images down to a medium resolution, and keeps that version as soon as it is smaller than your file. If it isn't, the screen setting goes further with low-resolution images. Fonts are subset and duplicate images are stored once. When neither setting beats the original, you get an error instead of a larger PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Will text stay searchable?
Yes. Ghostscript writes a new PDF but keeps text as text, so you can still select and search it. Most of the savings usually come from the images.
Can I pick the compression level?
No. The tool always tries the ebook setting first and only falls back to the stronger screen setting when ebook doesn't make the file smaller. Scanned documents lose sharpness, most of all with the screen setting, so check the result before you delete the original.
